History

Department of History currently offers four year major in History as well as 3 year multidisciplinary general degree.

Department of History

The History Department of Syamaprasad College forms an integral part of the institution. History was introduced as an elective subject in 1962 but recently in 2015 it became a full -fledged Honours department. The department adopts bilingual mode of teaching thus benefitting students from both English and Bengali medium background. History Department aims to equip and empower students with relevant knowledge, competence and creativity to face global challenge. Although many students come from humble background yet their quest for knowledge and enthusiasm in understanding the link between the past present and future needs to be appreciated. Apart from academic pursuit, history as a subject has immense scope in the professional world. One studying history may be an Archivist, Museum Education Officer, Museum/Gallery Curator, and Civil Servant or may join Travel and Tourism sector.

1. To understand the history of Ancient India from the earliest times up to 600 C.E. and explain the social and political organization, religious beliefs and practices and social stratification, political relations, religion and philosophy, the Aryan problem.
2. To distinguish the Social Formations and Cultural Patterns of the ancient world and India.
3. To understand the transformation of modern India (1750-1964) through the colonial period highlighting the harmful impact of colonial rule, the consequent national movement for freedom and the birth of a new Indian state.
4. To demonstrate in written work and class discussions the ability to recognize and articulate the diversity of human experience, including ethnicity, race, language, gender, as well as political, economic, social, and cultural structures over time and space.
5. To create their own historical analysis of documents and develop the ability to think critically and historically when discussing the past.
6. To analyse the political and socio-economic transformation of Europe and creation of modern Europe and the History of East Asia (1839-1950) with China and Japan and U.S.A.
7. To apply the knowledge of World Politics in the 20th century (1919-2000) with emphasis on the rise of dictatorships, the Second World War, the Bi-polar world and the beginning of a uni-polar, globalized world.
8. To analyze and synthesize the major events in modern European History from 1789 to 1939.

Short Bio

Dr. Susmita Mukherjee, Associate Professor & HOD

Qualifications: M.Phil, Ph. D.

Short Profile: Dr. Susmita Mukherjee is Vice Principal of Syamaprasad College affiliated to University of Calcutta. She is an Associate Professor and departmental head of History. She graduated from Lady Brabourne College and completed her Masters, M.Phil and Ph.D Programme from Calcutta University. Her PhD thesis is titled, Women and Medical Profession in Colonial Bengal, Mid- Nineteenth to Mid Twentieth Century. Besides gender and medicine in Colonial India she has also worked on the activities of the Bengali Revolutionaries in Burma. She is currently working on the publication of her thesis. She is a member of Indian History Congress, Institute of Historical Studies and Indian Association for the Asian and Pacific Studies (IAAPS). She is EC member of last IAAPS. Ms. Sulagna Som, State Aided College Teacher

Qualifications: M. A, M. Phil

Short Profile: Sulagna Som is State Aided College Teacher in the Department of History. After graduating from Scottish Church College with History Honours, She completed her Master’s in History from Calcutta University. She completed her M.Phil from Calcutta University, History Department. Now She is pursuing her Ph.D programme from Jadavpur University, History Department. Her area of specialization is ‘History of Medicine in colonial India’. She is a life member of Paschimbanga Itihas Samsad, Bangiya Itihas Samiti, Indian History Congress, Itihas Academy Dhaka, and a regular member of British Association for South Asian Studies etc. Her various articles have been published in renowned national and international journals.

Mr. Arnab Adhikary, State Aided College Teacher

Qualifications: M.A, M.Phil

Short Profile: Arnab Adhikary is a State-Aided College Teacher in the Department of History. After graduating from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira College with Honours in History, he completed his Masters in Jadavpur University and M.Phil programme from Rabindra Bharati University. His dissertation for M.Phil was based on the ‘political history of contemporary Bengal’. Now he is a senior Ph.D scholar in the RBU in the Dept. of History. He has previously served as a Guest Lecturer at ‘Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira College’, ‘Jogamaya Devi College’ and ‘Derozio Memorial College.’ He is also associated with various academic institutes like Indian History Congress, Pashimbanga Itihas Samsad etc.

Mr. Pranjal Ray, State Aided College Teacher

Qualifications: M.A, M.Phil, NET AND SET Qualified

Short Profile: Pranjal Ray is a State- Aided College Teacher in the Department of History Syamaprasad College. He graduated from Presidency College in History honours. He then completed his M.A. in History from Presidency University and qualified for SET and NET. He has completed his M. Phil from Calcutta University in Foreign Policy Studies. His area of interest is Colonial Public Health Policy in India on which he is pursuing his Ph. D from Presidency University.

Mr. Saheed Hossain, State Aided College Teacher

Qualifications: M.A, B. Ed

Short Profile: Saheed Hossain is a State Aided College Teacher in the department of History. After graduating from Dinobondhu Andrews College with Honours in History, He completed his Master’s in Ancient Indian History from Calcutta University and B. Ed from David Hare Training College. He has previously served as Part – Time lecturer at Asutosh College.

Mr. Arindam Ghosh, Visiting Faculty

Qualifications: M.A, M.Phil, NET AND SET Qualified

Short Profile: Arindam Ghosh is a visiting faculty of Syamaprasad college in the Department of History. He has graduated from Rabindra Bharati University securing the first class first position with Honours in History. he has been completed his MA and M.Phil from Rabindra Bharati University holding first class second position in both the degrees. He has qualified National Eligibility Test and State Eligibility Test (WB) too. Arindam Ghosh is a regular member of Indian History Congress and life member of Paschimbanga Itihas Sansad. His various articles have been published in renowned national and international journals. He has a keen interest on tribes,  tribal culture, and the history of North East India.
